Before I returned, everyone warned me that I would find it frustrating relocating to Jamaica and starting my coaching practice here. I took everything on board that people said, yet still yearned to return to the place of my birth, the green isles of the Indies…The journey has been slow and at times arduous, which has meant that my focus has been diverted from my writing, I’ve also just started my MSc in Education for Sustainability – one of my other passions.
So I thought that for the next few posts, I would share with you my frustrations and challenges of setting up my practice here in Jamaica while completing my MSc. At times I will look at the limiting beliefs that I face as well as the hurdles, how I tackle them and how things turned out…if anyone has any pearls of wisdom to share, please feel free to do so…
Apart from adapting to the rhythm and pace of life in Jamaica, I have already had to find ways to remain positive when the hurdles present themselves. My latest hurdle has been the registering of my practice…”Dragonfly Pathways”. I was told after completing all the paperwork and paying the required amount to ‘The Companies Office of Jamaica’ that the name of my practice was not acceptable, as it was two random words put together…
This was my response to them:

RE: Companies Act, Rule 11: Dragonfly Pathways
I was extremely excited on Tuesday 23rd September 2014 when I received a missed call from the Companies Office of Jamaica. When I returned their call, I was told that unfortunately my company name had not been approved due to Rule 11.
The name ‘Dragonfly Pathways’ was developed after numerous discussions and research into names used within the international coaching industry over a six month period. As an accredited and qualified coach, trainer and teacher it is my desire to provide quality coaching and training both in Jamaica and Overseas, with the option to expand into environmental and charity programmes within the next ten years without being restricted by a name. ‘Dragonfly Pathways’ has the scope to develop into an international brand, that works with both the private and public sectors.
In many cultures across the world the Dragonfly symbolises change, self-realization and living in the moment. Through coaching we are able to achieve a certain type of self awareness that allows us to discover the solutions to our challenges and enables an individual to achieve success by accomplishing the goals that they have set for themselves. Through coaching one is able to begin or continue on the path of self discovery and of being the best that one can be in every aspect of life.
‘Dragonfly Pathways’ aims to recognise that every individual has their own particular path to walk in order to achieve the success that they aspire to.
It is my belief that all people are on a journey, whether it be the journey of life or the journey of self discovery and fulfilment. Through coaching and training individuals are able to accomplish their goals. The ‘dragonfly accomplishes its objectives with utmost simplicity and effectiveness’ – this is core to the principle of my practice. ‘Pathways’ focuses on the route to success and the steps that individuals take that is specific to them.
‘Dragonfly Pathways’ is not only the name that I hope to use for my company it is the name that I hope will become a brand that will be recognised here at home and abroad.
I would like to thank you for your consideration in this matter. I am extremely excited about moving forward and continuing on my own path of success. For me starting my own company is no longer a dream, it is a target. Once the company is approved then I will be able to start practising. I recognise that as an entrepreneur there are many challenges, those we are aware of and those that come out of left field, like Rule 11.
I look forward to your positive response.
